This is the main blog/updates for the progress of the Man of the Year competition for 2011 for Todd Stuart.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) wants you to help me celebrate your ability to help others. Plus, have the opportunity to help me compete for a variety of media opportunities and ultimately for the title of Man or Woman of the Year.
The reason I am participating is not for the media coverage or to fulfill some kind of prestigious recognition. I am simply running to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma society advance its mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
The Man & Woman of the Year campaign is a fundraising competition among individuals in the community who, through their participation, vie for the honor of being the Man or Woman of the Year. The candidates who raise the most funds during the 10-week campaign will be awarded the title of Man & Woman of the Year. Candidates run in honor of the Boy & Girl of the Year, who are local blood cancer patient survivors.
The Man & Woman of the Year campaign begins with a local kickoff event in the spring. At the kickoff, candiates receive information on how to run a successful campaign, learn more about our mission, meet other candidates and meet the local Boy & Girl of the Year. Community sponsors will be highlighted and success stories from previous participants will be shared.
After 10 weeks of fundraising, candidates and their guests will join sponsors and other prominent community members at our Grand Finale celebration for the announcement of the Man & Woman of the Year. Celebrate the outstanding achievements of all candidates while participating in the excitement of live and silent auctions and enjoying fabulous food, cocktails and music.
Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Man & Woman of the Year" titles, by raising funds for blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks; the top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles.
Man & Woman candidates are goal-oriented and compassionate. Their relentless efforts are focused on making life better for hundreds of thousands of patients battling blood cancers: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Funds raised by Man & Woman of the Year participants are used for:
- Lifesaving blood cancer research
- Financial assistance to cover patient expenses for transportation, medication and testing
- Free educational materials and events for patients and their families
- Local programs such as Family Support Groups and First Connection, a peer-to-peer counseling program
- Comprehensive, personalized assistance through the Information Resource Center
I believe this experience will be the most humbling and inspirational in my life. Please check back as we approach March for a list of activities and events to attend in helping raise money for LLS.
Now is the time to reflect on our blessings and to recharge our spirits.
Happy Holidays!
Todd
